New for 2026: Astronomy's Quantum Heart: the debut popular science (astronomy and physics) book by Dr Zach Cano.

At the very heart of the cosmos beats a quantum heart. The Universe abounds with beauty—from planetary nebulae to supernova remnants to galaxy superclusters—all of which arise because of the complex interplay between quantum and gravitational phenomena. Stars shine because the nuclei surging around in their hot and dense cores must obey the uncertainty principles that Heisenberg discovered a century ago; the same principles also tell us about the very nature of dark matter—that unknown stuff that keeps all of the stars in galaxies bound together, instead of flying off into space. In Astronomy’s Quantum Heart, astronomer Gabby and her closest colleagues and students at the University of St. Andrews discover that the answers to provocative questions—such as whether gravitational waves have wave–particle duality and does gravity collapse the wave function—are being found by astronomers gazing intently into the unfathomable depths of space. Through their stories we will come to understand that reality as we know and experience it only arises because all of the Universe’s stuff—atoms, nuclei, light—comes in discrete packets called quanta. Without quanta, and their all-important effect on astronomical spectroscopy, it would be impossible to measure what planets and stars and galaxies are formed of, how fast they rotate and move through space, and how galaxies form vast superclusters spanning billions of light years. We will also discover how light emitted by quasars located on opposite sides of the Universe has been used by astronomers to provide irrefutable evidence that reality is inherently non-local.

Science Writing

I have written feature articles for several popular science magazines, including Sky & Telescope, BBC's The Sky at Night Magazine, Astronomy Now, and Mercury Magazine.

Examples of my writing can be seen in my portfolio.

Language Editing

I am a freelance English language editor, and I have edited thousands of STEM articles written by non-native English speakers since 2012. My clients include the American Astronomical Society (AAS) and Compuscript, as well numerous individual researchers.

I primarily edit Word documents and LaTeX files.

My clients are based all over the world, who are researchers in the following fields:

  • Astronomy & Astrophysics
  • Physics
  • Space Science & Robotics
  • Mathematics
  • Geophysics
  • Atmospheric & Earth Sciences
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Engineering & materials sciences
  • Remote sensing
  • Modelling techniques
  • Computing & computer technology
  • Informatics & Information technology

I help my clients improve their manuscripts to a publishable standard, who have published their work in the following international journals (non-exhaustive list):
